Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions parents and students ask most often.

Does my child need a maths tutor?

Not necessarily. If your child is attending school regularly, managing classwork and homework and making good progress towards their desired grade, tutoring may not be required. During the free introductory call and trial lesson, I will explore your goals, identify any areas where support may help and offer an honest recommendation.

What happens in the free introductory call and trial lesson?

We start with a short call to talk about your child’s goals, their exam board and level, and any worries they have. Your child then has a one-hour trial lesson so they can see how my lessons work. Afterwards I give you an honest recommendation on whether tutoring would help, and there is no obligation to continue.

How much do lessons cost?

Individual 1-2-1 lessons cost £60 per hour. The introductory call and trial lesson are free. Fees are paid in advance, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, whichever you prefer. Full details are on the fees and cancellation page.

When should my child start maths tutoring?

Starting earlier allows time to identify and address any gaps in understanding before they become harder to overcome. However, it’s never too late to begin. Focused tuition can still make a meaningful difference even over a shorter period. The best time to start depends on your child’s current needs and goals.

How often should my child have lessons?

Weekly lessons are usually ideal, as they provide consistent support, reinforce topics covered at school and help maintain progress. However, I can adapt the frequency of lessons to suit each student’s individual needs.

When are lessons available?

Lessons are one hour long and usually take place weekly at an agreed time in the early evening. However, I can also offer weekend and daytime lessons to fit around your child’s routine. You can choose to book lessons all year round or term time only.

How do online lessons work?

Lessons take place online on Zoom (my preferred platform) or Microsoft Teams. Your child will need a computer or tablet, speakers and a microphone or headphones, a quiet space to work, pen, paper and a calculator.

Will my child get homework between lessons?

No, work is not routinely set in between lessons, as some students feel that enough homework is set by their school. However, I can set practice questions and mark work if requested.

Will I get feedback on my child’s progress?

Yes, I make notes after each lesson and am happy to provide written or verbal feedback about your child’s progress on your request.

Do you tutor students outside the UK?

Yes, I teach students in the UK and overseas, including those following the International GCSE. Tell me your time zone when you enquire, and we’ll find a lesson time that works for you both.

Can you help my child resit GCSE maths?

Yes, I have helped students retake GCSE maths and pass.

Do you tutor home-educated children?

Yes, my lessons are tailored to fit your child’s unique pace, ability and chosen educational path. I can also offer daytime lessons to fit around your child’s routine.

Do you tutor neurodiverse students?

Yes, I have tutored many neurodiverse students and can flex my lessons according to each student’s needs.
